General News: Tree Memories & Art Wanted

April 08, 2010

As part of an exhibit focusing on local Orange County trees, the Orange County Citizens Foundation is collecting memories and stories from local residents about trees in their communities. The information will be displayed as part of their 2010 Cultural Exhibit, which is scheduled to open in September.

The goal of the project is to help people of all ages become more aware of the importance of trees to our environment, communities and heritage. “Over the past several decades, Orange County and the nation have lost a number of tree species due to disease, changes in the environment and development,” said Nancy Proyect, President of the Orange County Citizens Foundation. “By developing relationships with trees in their local communities, we hope large numbers of people will begin to recognize the importance of healthy trees and responsible development to our future.”

The project has five distinct components and has been designed as a moveable exhibit so that it can travel around the county throughout Orange County’s schools, museums, and libraries.

Send In Your Favorite Tree Story

Local tree stories and memories are the first piece of the exhibit. This portion of the project will be collected and published in a booklet for visitors to take with them. Oral histories will be posted on the Orange County Citizens Foundation’s website. “Surely one of the best ways to tie people to their local community is to tell stories and recollect memories of times past,” Proyect said. “We are counting on our local citizens to help develop a written and oral shared history for our children and newer residents. We believe this will be one of the most popular components of the exhibit.”

Coolest Trees Contest

Other components include:
Fourth and eighth grade students will participate in two separate “Coolest Trees Contest” to find the biggest, spookiest, oldest, strangest-looking, best climbing, or most beautiful trees in their town or neighborhood. All students will receive a certificate of participation. Students will submit information and a creative display representing their tree. First, second and third place winners (by grade level and category) will have their submission framed and exhibited at the Kurt Seligmann Homestead and Gallery in Sugar Loaf and at the Orange County Executive Gallery at the County Government Center in Goshen. Fourth and eighth grade students were chosen for this portion of the project because in those years of study, students learn about New York State and regional history. For more information about this project, please contact the Citizens Foundation or download a copy of the contest guidelines at www.occitizensfoundation.org.

Tree Art Exhibit

An exhibit of artwork in a variety of mediums representing local trees is also planned. Works will include but are not limited to paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture, jewelry, and crafts. The exhibit will be featured at the Orange County Citizens Foundation’s Annual Meeting and Exhibit Opening in September 2010. It will then move to SUNY Orange for a month-long exhibition featuring lectures and showcases highlighting the importance of trees to our environment.

A hands-on exhibit of specimen bark and woods is planned. The exhibit will include information about a variety of tree species, a raw piece of wood from each along with a sample cylinder of the same wood turned on a lathe. General information on each tree type will be included, as well as information on what the tree’s wood was traditionally used for in Orange County’s history (i.e. construction, furniture, tools, shade, flood control, medicinal). This exhibit will be displayed with both the Coolest Tree exhibit and the professional/amateur show.

Learn About Your Trees

A series of lectures and presentations on trees and their importance to the environment and our communities is planned. These presentations will be organized by Cultural Affairs at SUNY Orange and will include the physical exhibit. In addition, the Citizens Foundation hopes to plan excursions to areas of the region that have interesting local tree populations.

Submissions may be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to the Orange County Citizens Foundation at PO Box 525, Sugar Loaf, NY 10981. Please include your name and contact information. Submissions can also be faxed to 845-469-3145.
