General News: Food for Fines

April 05, 2012

From the Cornwall Public Library

Want to get rid of overdue fines on your library card? Beginning Monday, April 9 through Saturday, April 21, Cornwall Public Library will accept non-perishable food items in exchange for overdue fines. For each item donated, $1.00 in fines will be cleared during this “Food for Fines” period (with the exception of Ramen Noodles, where 5 packages will = $1.00 in fines cleared).

All food items must be non-perishable, in their original packaging, and new – well within their “use before” dating. No open or damaged items will be accepted. Credit for items applies only to overdue fines. No replacement costs for lost or damaged items will be waived. All donations will be given to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, a local organization that supports area food pantries in distributing food to anyone in need.

“We’re looking for items such as canned protein (tuna, chicken), canned entrees (beef stew, ravioli), canned fruit in juice, canned spaghetti sauce, canned soup, Cereal, and 100% Juice” said Karen LaRocca-Fels, the library’s director. “We’re also inviting anyone who comes in to vote on the library’s 2012/2013 Operating Budget on April 17th to bring in a food item to donate.” Voting takes place in the library’s Community Room on April 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 9 p.m. The library will also remain open through 9:00 p.m. on the day of the vote, instead of closing at their usual time of 8 o’clock.

Contact the library with any questions, at 534-8282.
