Three weeks after the blizzard that dumped nearly three feet of snow on the area and damaged hundreds, if not, thousands of trees, local clean-up is still high on people’s minds.

On Monday, crews were busy in both Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson picking up bundles of broken branches and putting the larger fallen limbs through the chipper machines. In Cornwall, highway superintendent Robert Conley announced that this week his crews would be finalizing the pick up of brush from the storm in district one -- largely in the town.  The crews will then focus their effort on picking up storm-related debris in district two -- outside the town.  He noted that regularly scheduled yard waste pick-up will resume on Wednesday, April 14 in district one. The village DPW intends to keep picking up the storm debris left on the side of the road.

School Grounds Staff Recognized for Their Work

The building and grounds staff of the Cornwall Central School District received a warm reception at the school board meeting on Monday night as their chief, Walter Moran, described how several of them shoveled the deep snow by hand the weekend after the storm so that classes could resume the following Monday.

School was closed for three days during the blizzard and officials at the school at first thought it would be impossible to remove the heavy snow to safely re-open less than 48 hours after the snow stop falling. Board president Larry Berger said he toured the school grounds on Saturday and didn’t think it was possible to clear the grounds in time by Monday. “They did a remarkable job,” Berger said.

Building and grounds superintendent Walter Moran thanked all of the staff for their intensive efforts to clear the snow in time for the re-opening. He also recognized Jerry Pinconske for his dedicated effort to save as many of the trees as possible on all of the schools’ grounds and head custodian Jill Stewart for overseeing efforts to clean up at the high school.
