General News: Resident Wants Speed Lowered on 9W

February 04, 2010

A woman who lives on Route 9W near Quaker Avenue thinks the speed should be lowered along that section of the state highway and she is asking the Cornwall town council to do something about.

Elizabeth Lupi appeared before the town council on Monday, where she described the threats faced by school buses and others who try to stop along the stretch of Route 9W from Willow to Quaker Avenues. She recalled the tragic death of a 20-year-old man who was trying to cross the busy roadway on foot on Thanksgiving Day.

Lupi proposed that the council request a reduction of speed from 45 mph to 40 mph in the area. The council members said the state, which sets the speed limit, would likely respond more favorably to the request if it is accompanied by a traffic consultant report paid for by the town.

The town council may look into the change, but councilwoman Mary Beth Greene Krafft recalled that it took four years to get the speed limit lowered on Pleasant Hill Road, a county thoroughfare where the town also produced a consultant’s report

Comments:

5 mph reduction?!? How about knocking it down to 30 or 35? At least that would justify all the money changing the signs. The police can set up a constant speed trap like Fort Montgomery seems to. Big revenue generator potential for the town. I vote yes.

I was almost run off the road by a carload of jerks in a sporty little 'match-box' car right before Laurel Ave. intersection. They just *had* to make the light. Why should we have to wait (and pay for) some state authorized study? Throw some old bicycle chassis and a bunch of kids' toys (those little tykes items are *really* durable)into the roadway and get some stay at home moms to line the highway holding 'slow down!' signs. Once we get newspaper coverage the state will pay a little more attention. The whole stretch from Willow to the 9W intersection is a hazard.

Good Morning Elizabeth,

While I most assuredly agree with a reduction in that particular area it is exremely hard to change the speed limit on a state road. When my family moved here we would not even look at houses on the other side of 9W. I think an easier way around would be to have the state install an elevated walkway which would make things MUCH safer. I think the hospital could pressure the state into this happening. With all the money thrown into KJ this project would cost much less and save future lives, Mr Larkin as always would lend his support to the project. Safety First. GL

While the pedestrian has the right of way, while roll the dice with car(s) coming? The deceased never get their day in court!

I remember when our current Mayor first ran for office the West Point commuters was a topic that was brought up and was to be brought under control. When West Point workers get out at the end of day it's like the Indy 500 on 218 from the gate to wherever they're headed. It's very hard to cross the street without running for your life.

Want income. Set up a radar gun(calibrated properly please) and pull over anyone exceeding 40 mph. Yes 40 is a good place to start as most walkers can tell you that a policeofficer will be quite busy at that speed limit.

This problem has never been addressed by our current Mayor. Just Lip Service and hounding our past Chief out of office.

Oh yes and where did our waste receptacle idea go. Oh yes more lip service along with the Debt that was to be eliminated within 10 years. Really hate being lied to by politicians, whether our current President or current Mayor.

4 years nothing was done. nothing was even tried. Prob could have called the state myself and had it done, just like we did when we wanted the school bus signs up. Town likes to make simple things complex.
