The era of the flapper is brought to life on the stage of Willow Avenue Elementary School this weekend with three performances of Charleston! A Crazy Musical Comedy of the 1920s by members of the school’s drama club.

At a rehearsal on Wednesday evening, the fourth grade girls were dressed in the shimmery dresses that were symbolic of the freedom women experienced in the 1920s, when hemlines rose above the ground for the first time.

The lead character, Polly Pepper, brings all the characteristics of the flapper era to the stage. When she comes home to her aunt’s Long Island mansion to celebrate her 18th birthday with her friends, she tells everyone about her life in Manhattan where she won a dance marathon, went out with the mayor and went to so many parties she can hardly remember.

I’m A Flapper

More importantly, she is trying to become a member of the famous Ziegfeld Follies, where she can pursue her dancing dreams on stage. Polly and her friend celebrate this good news with a rousing song and dance number, “I’m A Flapper.”

As the party approaches, Polly begins to see that all is not well with her aunt, Mrs. Granville, who has befriended the Duke and Duchess of Madoff, whose name suggest to contemporary audiences that they are up to no good. The Madoffs want Mrs. Granville to invest her money with them, promising huge profits, and she is about to sign on the dotted line.

Trouble Lurks on Stage

The Madoffs aren’t the only ones pursuing Mrs. Granville’s wealth. Mona, the owner of the Crazy Cat Nite Club has hired two gangsters to infiltrate Polly’s party in order to steal a diamond necklace that is so ornate it has been given the nickname “The Ice Garden.”

At the Crazy Cat we meet the devious trio and, of course, a bevy of beautiful girls who tap dance and sing to the tune of “Toot, Toot, Tootsie.”

Musical Sings with Little Voices, Lots of Talent

Meanwhile on the estate, Polly’s suitor, Buck Wayne, flies his plane in, landing on the lawn, in order to be present for her birthday. “You make my heart beat faster than a tiger stampede,” Buck declares to Polly. And it’s a good thing that he brought his plane because it will come in handy when Polly gets called back to Manhattan for an audition with Mr. Ziegfeld just hours before her party gets underway.

Charleston! is a musical and, of course, the 100+ young actors take every opportunity to show off their skills in singing and dance. If you go to one of the performances this weekend, you will hear familiar songs like “Happy Days Are Here Again,” “Baby Face,” and “Button Up Your Overcoat.” From the first-graders to the fourth-graders, each actor sings their heart out and is a pleasure to enjoy.

The public is invited to attend shows this Friday and Saturday at 7 pm and on Sunday at 1 pm. Seating is limited.
