General News: Cornwall Schools Face Loss of State Aid

January 27, 2010

The Cornwall Central School District faces a comparatively light blow from the budget axe that threatens to fall if  New York governor David Paterson's proposed cuts to schools across the state are approved.

Schools assistant superintendent for business, Harvey Sotland told the board of education on Monday that the district will loose $500-$750,000 in state aid if the governor’s proposal goes through.  The governor's office is using a formula to assess every school district with a "Gap Elimination Adjustment."  That adjustment for the Cornwall School District is $1.3 million but, according to Sotland, increases in other areas of state aid will soften the impact of that loss, bringing the net loss to $500-750,000.

The current Cornwall school district budget is $55.9 million. Other Orange County school districts will feel the impact of cuts much harder. Most notably, the Highland Falls school district is facing a projected loss of $2.2 million in state and federal money for its $24 million budget.

As the school budget process gets underway, the school board is inviting members of the public to join the school budget advisory committee. For more information, Jean Hach, board secretary, at 534-8009, ext. 7000 by February 12.
