If you are looking for some light-hearted entertainment, Cornwall high school is the place for you this weekend. It’s where you will find the Cornwall Elementary School’s production of 101 Dalmatians Kids, populated by dozens of young actors dressed as adorable puppies and their human masters, all singing their hearts out in this well-known Disney tale.

From the moment the curtain raises you are transported to another time – this one a beautiful spring garden that will lift your spirits on sight. Enter the dozens of dancing Dalmatians and the show is off to a rollicking start with music and dance.

The Dalmatians, who live with their parent dogs, Pongo and Perdito, and their owners, Roger and Anita, tell the audience about their favorite evening pastime – a television show called “Mighty Thunderbolt is Here.”

Who wouldn’t fall for a bunch of dancing Dalmatians whose chorus line is a rousing “Arf, Arf, Arf?” It seems that while watching “Mighty Thunderbolt,” the puppies also learn to love a tasty snack, Canine Crunchies, whose jingle they sing repeatedly.

Enter into this placid domestic scene Cruella DeVil, a woman with a passion for exotic fur coats who falls in love with the black-and-white spots of the small Dalmatians. She tells Roger that she would like to buy the pups and care for them but Roger and his wife, Anita, wonder if she really wants to care for them or just “wear them.”

The song “Cruella DeVil” is one of the show-stoppers of the evening with its saltry pace belted out by Anita in a passionate duet with her husband.

Meanwhile, in her studio, Cruella reveals her true intention to make a beautiful Dalmatian coat and hatches a plot with her henchmen Horace and Jasper, accompanied by Luella and Suella, the good angel and the bad angel. They conspire to steal the Dalmatian pups from Roger and Anita by luring them outside with a truckload full of their favorite snack, Canine Crunchies. She tells her cohorts that she plans to “bonk them on their little heads” to get her beautiful “fluffy black and white coat.”

As a chaotic hunt for the missing puppies ensues children come running from all directions, down the aisles of the theaters to the stage, dancers, including the so-called foreign dancers – Irish step dancers, Mexican dancers and French poodles -- perform “Twilight Bark.”

By the end of the 45-minute performance, Cruella and her gang have been thwarted in their plan and Roger and Anita can return home with their adorable Dalmatian pups.

The performance by more than 100 Cornwall Elementary School students is directed and choreographed by Ann Shatto with Karen Snider as musical director. Drama Club chairs Rhonda Growney and Maura Franke worked with more than a dozen parent volunteers to create the beautiful costumes and the simple yet effective set for the production.

The play, 101 Dalmatians Kids, can be seen at the Cornwall Central High School Auditorium in full performances on Saturday, January 23 at 7:00 and Sunday, January 24 at 1:00 pm. Tickets are $5.00 and are available at the door. For $1, people may attend the show’s dress rehearsal on Friday, January 22, at 7 pm.
