Fifth-grade art students at Cornwall Central Middle School had a wonderful opportunity to participate in an outreach program provided by Vassar College called “Every Artwork Tells a Story”. In Studio Art classes last month, students learned the basics of how to create the illusion of distance on a flat surface through landscape. They saw how foreground, middle ground, background and overlapping are used within art work and how these components support the illusion of depth.

The visiting museum educator, Nicole Roylance, enhanced the students’ understanding of landscape by showing a variety of landscape paintings created by some of the Hudson River School Artists. Roylance highlighted different aspects of the images by asking children what stands out first when they view the painting or asking them to think about why the artist painted this picture. Students shared their knowledge and their ideas about the paintings with enthusiasm.

After the class, student Abby Munterich said that she learned that adding animals and small things always count. Kate Gleason noted that the presentation helped her think of how her landscape was going to be positioned.

Art students then created their own versions of landscape paintings as a final project using crayon and watercolor. More student images are on display at the Cornwall Central Board Office through late February 2010.

Family members are encouraged to visit the Loeb Gallery at the beautiful Vassar College Campus to view, first hand, the variety of paintings on exhibit, including some of the Hudson River School Artists.   The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center is located at 124 Raymond Ave. in Poughkeepsie, NY 12604, and is open from 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday, with late hours until 9 pm on Thursdays, and on Sunday from 1 to 5 pm. The art center is closed on Mondays. Visit www.vassar.edu for more details.
