The new year got off to a messy start for the Mahoney family on Duncan Avenue when the chimney on their house caught on fire Friday morning.

Dan Mahoney said that he was feeding wood into the wood stove that is the primary source of heat for the house when he felt a fire in the chimney sucking air up. He took the burning logs out of the stove and threw them on the snow outside. He could see flames coming out of the chimney outside.

Two trucks of the Storm King Fire Engine Co. #2 responded to the alarm around 10 am, including the company’s 38-year-old ladder truck that was put into action to gain access to the roof. Fire company chief Jeff Armitage said the fire was extinguished with a metal rod that tamped the blaze down through the chimney.

Fire company members caught pieces of soot and ashes as it came down the chimney and back into the stove. Within an hour, the fire was fully extinguished. No one was injured in the incident.
