An aspect of human relationships with the natural world in Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson topped the list of stories that most interested readers in 2009 with an account about village property owners who are permitting bow hunting of deer around their homes. After a year of discussing what to do about the burgeoning deer population that is changing the dynamic of the area’s forest growth, bow hunting began in October and incited controversy. The story posted to this website received more than two dozen comments and Cornwall-on-Hudson mayor Joseph Gross said he received more than 200 letters denouncing the hunt from animal rights activists from across the country. (Read the story and comments here.)

The second most-read story this year was about Cornwall-on-Hudson mayor Joseph Gross’s victory at the polls in March, when he was voted in for a second term along with trustees Doug Vatter and Mark Edsall. (Read the story here)

Two of the top ten stories dealt with human loss in accidents that stole the lives of young residents. The accidental death of Dylan Donnelly on Thanksgiving Day was the third most-read story of the year while the death of high school student Kyle Lau in a motorcycle accident last May was number five. (Read story number three here and story number five here.)

The return of hometown hero General David Petraeus to a ceremony at the Cornwall middle school in October was read by a large number of people, putting it at the fourth most popular story of 2009. (Read the story here.)

The closing of two stores on Main Street garnered much attention, a reflection perhaps of general concern about the future of Cornwall’s business district. (Read it here.)

The widespread popularity of a great Cornwall tradition is seen in the appeal of the seventh and eight most-read stories, the first a series of photographs of people at the annual Cornwall Independence Day celebrations in town hall park and the second featuring the highlights of the annual Independence Day parade through Cornwall-on-Hudson and Cornwall. (Read the celebration story here and the parade story here.)

A crime story in the village about an assault on a young man behind the Cumberland Farms store that resulted in the arrest of three other young men was the ninth most-read story. (Read it here.)

And, rounding out the top ten was a story of an amazing escape from injury for a young motorcyclist who plunged over the cliff beneath Storm King Mountain. The motorcyclist, 29-year-old Edward Green, provided one of the most humorous lines of 2009 when he told police he had “a splendid view of the Hudson River” as he tumbled down the Cliffside. (Read the full story here.)
