General News: State Aid Cuts Have Small Impact in Cornwall

December 15, 2009

The Cornwall Central School District avoided a major hit from the withholding of state aid to schools announced on Monday by New York governor David Paterson.

Cornwall superintendent Timothy Rehm said that the district was scheduled to receive a smaller payment than usual this month and that the ten percent being withheld by order of the governor will not have an immediate impact. He said the state aid payment of $696,000 is reduced by $69,000 in December.

The Cornwall Central School District also missed a 19% cut to its STAR property tax rebate. Schools budget assistant superintendent Harvey Sotland explained that the district wasn’t scheduled for a tax rebate this month, so there was nothing to trim.

Rehm said if the funds are cut again next month and the month after, the district could have to go into its reserve funds to cover costs. “These are bad signs,” Rehm said in a brief interview, “but we have funds to operate our district on a daily basis.”
