General News: Notes from the Town Council Meeting

December 15, 2009

Art Promoters Honored

The council voted to recognize Mary Ann G. Neuman and Sue Fink for their “terrific job” organizing monthly art shows at Cornwall town hall. The council adopted a resolution applauding the two women’s efforts to display the work of talented local artists, a project they headed up for nearly nine years with the assistance of other members of the Culture in Cornwall Advisory committee. Neuman and Fink gave up the responsibility at the end of this year; Neuman said it was time for “new blood” to come in and future exhibits are expected to be organized by the town’s recreation department.

No Answer Yet on Ambulance Corps Proposal

COVAC’s newly-elected CEO Michael Bigg sat in the audience at the town meeting on Monday and, at the end of it, he asked if the council had any responses to the proposals the ambulance service had submitted earlier this month. COVAC is negotiating with the town to become independent, a move the requires the purchase of the vehicles and the COVAC headquarters building from the town. COVAC’s leadership had been pushing for an agreement by the end of the year but town supervisor Kevin Quigley told Bigg that the proposals are still being reviewed.

Parking Problem on Laurel Avenue?

A resident of Laurel Avenue appealed to the town council on Monday night to eliminate on-street parking on that street because, he said, the area was too congested. Manuel Longuiera told the council members that when vehicles are parked on both sides it was virtually impossible for a bus or large vehicle to pass through. He also noted that he had seen cars swerving to avoid children on their bicycles in area of Laurel Avenue between Route 9W and Alfred Street. Town council members said they would study the issue.
