Small is beautiful, a popular theme in the 1970s, has burst back onto the scene at the Hudson Valley Gallery in Cornwall-on-Hudson where 78 artists submitted 161 paintings they created on tiny canvases that measure 1 x 2 inches.

The exhibit of these tiny paintings opened on Friday and visitors were invited to vote for their favorite piece. Some patrons viewed the painted canvases through a magnifying glass to better see the amazing detail that some artists were able to add to their paintings; selecting just one piece to vote for was perhaps the most difficult task of all.

Subjects range from sweeping landscapes to a portrayal of The Last Supper by village artist Thomas Munterich. Other artists chose to focus on a simple image, like the second place painting of the front and back of a penny by another village resident, Jim Lawless.

Gallery owner Paul Gould said that the submissions this year, the second year he has held the competition, came from many places, including two from Scotland. Gould set up the competition with the assistance of Del-Bouree Bach who served as the awards official judge. Bach is a well-known marine artist and is active in many arts organizations.

On Saturday afternoon Bach had finished his appraisal of each painting in the competition and Gould held an awards ceremony to announce his decision. Twenty two paintings received awards, from an honorable mention to the top prize.

First prize went to a painting by Zack Stella of a white whale bursting through a turbulent ocean and sending sailors in two boats scattering in the churling waters. Second prize was awarded to Jim Lawless for his painting, “My Two Cents,” and Colette Aimee Burmester, of Brewster won third place for “Lifting Swift Dreams,” a portrait of a nude woman.

The other pieces that were awarded prizes included Reclining Pepper by Robert Trondsen who told Gould that it was the first time he had received an award for a painting since high school. Trondsen, a prolific landscape painter, also noted that he had not entered a competition since then as well. Local artists Lucy DiMiceli, Patty Valens and Thomas Munterich also received awards.

Gould said that he expects that the competition will attract even more entries next year. He has a supply of the small canvas in the gallery so anyone who would like to try painting a miniature can begin working of an entry now.

Stop by the Hudson Valley Gallery 246 Hudson Street, open Thursday thru Sunday 1-5pm through January 10, 2010, to view and purchase the small paintings, with prices as low as $25.

Comments:

If you have not yet stopped in at the Gallery, you MUST! Despite their tiny size some of these works are breathtaking. And there are so many styles presented that you are bound to find a few that suit your taste.
