After hanging the work of some 70 artists in exhibits at Cornwall Town Hall, Mary Ann G. Neuman, Sue Fink and other members of the Culture in Cornwall Advisory Committee are hanging up their hats following the final show of 2009, the Small Gems exhibit that will be celebrated at a public reception this Friday.

Neuman, a photographer who has served as the committee’s “schedule maker, letter writer, PR person and general Jill of all Trade” for eight years, says that she and other committee members have great memories of the dozens of local artists whose work they put on exhibit at Town Hall.

Committee Featured the Work of Unknown Local Artists

“It has been very beneficial for artists who may never have taken their work out of the closet and gotten exposure,” Neuman said in a recent interview. “We reached out to people who paint, photograph and do collage for their own enjoyment but then keep it home where nobody ever sees it. Once you can convince somebody to hang just one piece and people react positively to it, it encourages people to dig into their art.”

Her colleague Sue Fink, a painter herself, helped to hang many of the shows at Town Hall, along with Judy Cooper, who moved to Florida, and Sue Minier, a collage artist. Fink recently recalled the great variety of artwork that was on display over the years, from quilts and tea cosies to pastels and photographs.

Recreation Department to Continue Art Shows

Fink was in the original group of some 30 people who first met at the home of Ilene Osinski to plan how to bring more attention to the artistic talents of Cornwall residents.
Abby Mayer, the musician, is one of the few original members still active in the Culture in Cornwall Advisory Committee and Fink says she expects he will continue his efforts to bring musical performances to town. Fink says that, like Neuman, she has run out of steam and is ready for someone else to organize the art shows.

Town of Cornwall councilwoman Mary Beth Greene Krafft told Neuman that she would help carry the torch after December and that she has gotten approval for the town recreation department to oversee the exhibit series.

Time for a Change

Neuman says that she is a bit sad about handing over the art shows but says its time for new blood, new people and maybe some new artists. Fink shares her feeling and expresses her wishes for a rosy art future in town. “I care about people showing their art, about involving all artists, no matter what their skills are,” Fink said. “I just wanted the people to show and be happy.”

Come by the group’s final art opening this Friday at Cornwall Town Hall from 3 to 4:30 pm to wish them well (and see the art)!
