General News: Hydrologist Assesses Water Capacity in Wells

November 24, 2009

How much water lies underground in the aquifer that runs beneath Taylor Road in Mountainville? That’s the question that officials of both the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson and the village of Kiryas Joel are trying to answer.

Cornwall-on-Hudson Mayor Joseph Gross says that the village water department hired a hydrologist to test the capacity of its three wells on Taylor Road after hearing that the village of Kiryas Joel planned a similar test at four wells across the road. Gross is concerned that the village of Kiryas Joel will draw on its wells as part of its plan to build a pipeline to the Catskill aqueduct – a key part of its efforts to provide water to a growing population. Last week, Senator Schumer cast doubt on federal funding for the controversial pipeline, noting that widespread support for the project in the Orange County community doesn’t exist.
