General News: Donations to Light Up Christmas Tree

Donations will cover the cost of the tree lighting.

November 23, 2009

The cost of lighting the Christmas tree in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson is likely to go up to $1,000, according to village clerk Jeanne Mahoney, who added that the news prompted several village residents and the fire department to pitch in to cover the cost.

Last week, village trustees debated whether to spend $500 to light the 60-foot spruce tree in the village square at a time when the village is short on cash. The money is needed to purchase new lights to replace those that deteriorated during the past year when they were left on the tree.

After the Storm King Fire Engine Company took out its ladder late last week to take a closer look at the problematic lights, the replacement costs went up, too. As news of the additional expense spread, the fire department announced that it would contribute $500 to cover the cost, in addition to the $100 a piece pledged by trustee Mark Edsall and police chief Paul Weber.

Gary Fiorello, owner of Village Pizza, stepped up with a $100 contribution, followed by police officer Mike Lug with $100, and residents Louise Carnright and Dennis Wood with individual donations.

Ask Central Hudson for a corporate sponsorship ...in exchange for placing a (very discreet) sign acknowledging their contribution to the community. Hey, their logo could be tweaked into the Star of Bethlehem.
Just an idea.

How about this:
A non-profit entity set up that can accept voluntary contributions for Christmas and holiday decorating. The trees get decorated and you get a small tax write-off. Perhaps this can be a subdivision of an already existing entity in the town (fire, ems, food bank, etc.)
Just an idea, nothing more.

Another great idea:
In a couple of years we can ask KJ to donate the money for the lights. They should be making a nice profit when they start charging us for our own water. Great article in the Record today about KJ having contractors at the wells on Nov 17 setting up.
Merry Christmas.
