General News: Vehicles Vandalized, Suspect Flees Police

November 17, 2009

Cornwall-on-Hudson police chief Paul Weber says his department is investigating a series of at least nine car break-ins that occurred in the pre-dawn hours on Saturday morning, November 14, by what appears to be a professional thief.

Weber says that a local resident spotted a male suspect looking into vehicles with a flashlight on Pine Street around 4 a.m. The resident attempted to interrupt the crime in progress and the suspect took off in his vehicle, a white van. According to the police report, the van struck and a damaged a tow truck that was parked nearby before being driven across the lawn of a residence and hitting a curb, which deflated the front tire and damaged the vehicle.

When police officer Seth Armstrong arrived, he found the van abandoned at the corner of Spruce Street and River Avenue. Police say that the van had been reported stolen in the City of Newburgh.

Chief Weber reports that the police searched for the suspect for several hours without results but that the investigation is still looking into some DNA evidence. He notes that, unlike crimes of opportunity in which thieves target unlocked vehicles, the break-ins on Friday night were done by breaking windows. Most of the items stolen from the vehicles, which included GPS parts, electronic devices and tools were recovered, Weber says.

Chief Weber reminds the public that if they witness a possible crime in progress to immediately contact authorities rather than intervene directly. “Monitor, follow but don’t engage a bad guy,” Weber told the public at the village board meeting on Monday night. “Give us a chance to get there and do whatever is necessary to make an arrest.”

Comments:

Bit of a bad title on this one. It diminishes the act. Should read "Thief makes off with property after chase and crash".

I do applaud the person who stepped up and tried to help. The last paragraph is the one people should commit to memory. Get involved without putting yourself or others at risk. Make the phone call, get a good description, be the best witness you can be.

I too applaud the person taking action, those thinking of no Village PD on weekends should take notice.

Another point.
Why can't articles ever include a detailed description of the suspect anymore. No doubt political correctness is to blame. I suggest we print out the article and just ask everybody we see on the street if this is them. This way we can have them turn themselves in. (wait, I don't think that will work either.) Oh well, good luck everyone.

This is scary! I remember feeling really creeped out and violated when my gps was stolen after I forgot to lock my car. But to think of someone breaking the window in our own driveways... that is downright disgusting! I know we're not immune to crime, but people purchase homes in Cornwall to raise their children in a safe place! This is so sad to me; definitely not the Cornwall I grew up in.
