This weekend, some talented fifth and sixth grade students at Cornwall Central Middle School are putting on a musical performance that will transport you back in time to the magical kingdom of 19th-century Siam, where a British teacher encounters a world so unlike her own.

The musical team of Rodgers and Hammerstein created "The King and I," a musical that tells the story of Anna and her young son who travel to Siam (Thailand) to teach the dozens of young children of the King and his many wives. Anna must “Whistle a Happy Tune” in the face of this overbearing King but over time she becomes his confidante and helps him to understand the world outside of Siam. Anna, too, is changed as she experiences this new culture, a change she expresses in the well-known tune, “Getting to Know You.”

In the CCMS PTO Little Theatre production, Anna is played with great style by Olivia Perrone. The king’s role is carried brilliantly by Michael Doulin and the prince is played by John Michael Zanin.

The strength of this production, however, lies in the wonderful dances and choral performances by the wives, the sailors, the children, guards and banner girls who move about the stage in stunning costumes to create the splendor of the royal palace of a bygone era.

Music teacher Valerie Ransbottom directed the production of The King and I, with students assisting as directors, music directors, set builders and sound and light crews. Ransbottom enjoys these annual stage productions as she writes in the show program, “Seeing these students work together on every aspect of this show from planning through execution has been quite revealing and professionally rewarding. I’ve truly enjoyed seeing these developing leaders, teachers, and learners in action. “

A willing group of parents volunteered to create the beautiful costumes and to handle the myriad parts of the production that will ensure that opening night, this Friday night at 7 p.m, ,will be a success.
