General News: Tuesday's Election to Decide County Races

October 29, 2009

Voters will have the chance to vote in countywide races next Tuesday, November 3, as well as in municipal elections in many area towns.

Topping the field of candidates are incumbent Orange County executive Ed Diana, a Republican, and his challenger, Democrat Pat O’Dwyer. Diana also has the backing of the Conservative and Independence parties while O’Dwyer counts on the support of the Working Families party. County clerk Donna Benson and district attorney Frank Phillips are running unopposed on the Republican, Conservative and Independence lines.

The Local Legislative Race

In Cornwall, voters will be electing county legislators in races that could shift the balance of power, which is currently split between ten Republicans, ten Democrats and one Independent.

In District 12, Republican Kevin Hines will face Democrat Richard Randazzo in a race to fill the seat vacated by retiring Republican legislator Alan Seidman. Robert Fromaget, the candidate of the Working Families Party who lost the Democratic primary in September, will appear on the ballot but he has thrown his support to fellow Democrat Randazzo.

In District 15, incumbent Democratic legislator Chris Eachus is being challenged by Republican K. James Dittbrenner. (Read profiles of these four candidates here.)

Candidates in the Town of Cornwall

In the town of Cornwall, four candidates of the Republican and Conservative parties are running unopposed for re-election to their seats. Supervisor Kevin Quigley, who is running for a second term, joins town clerk Elaine Tilford Schneer and town council members Mary Beth Greene Krafft and Al Mazzocca on the ticket.

Voters in neighboring municipalities like New Windsor, Newburgh and Montgomery will find more crowded ballots as candidates from several parties vie for public office, including judgeships. There are more than a dozen candidates running for four judges ‘ seats on the New York State Supreme Court.

Two Referendums

Two referendums are on the ballot as well. One asks voters to decide whether the state should transfer six acres of land in St. Lawrence county to the national power grid and the second addresses the issue of whether prison inmates should be allowed to perform work for non-profit organizations.

Comments:

Everyone talks about saving money in their profiles. Why dont we combine District 12 & 15 and save the taxpayers.
