General News: Man Charged in Heavy Equipment Theft

October 28, 2009

A New Windsor man has been charged with stealing a quarter of million dollars worth of heavy equipment, including a Harley Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle that was recently reported stolen by a resident of Cornwall-on-Hudson and a Caterpillar backhoe that was stolen from the Reserve residential development off Mount Airy Road last August.

New Windsor police say they arrested 24-year-old Richard Ostner on Tuesday, October 27, on charges of criminal possession of stolen property in the second degree, six counts of criminal possession in the third degree and one count of grand larceny. Police had been investigating Ostner since last week, when police in the city of Newburgh charged him in the theft of a Bobcat excavating machine from the Lake Street area of New Windsor.

After that incident, New Windsor police said they searched a vacant property on Jackson Avenue owned by the Ostner family and found the backhoe, an excavator, a tractor, a skid steer, a utility trailer and the Harley Davidson.

Ostner was sent to the Orange County jail in lieu of $15,000 bail.

He should have gotten a job at United Rental in NW. He'd be the best delivery/pick-up guy ever.
