October 21, 2009

On Sunday, members of the Cornwall Historical Society will bury a time capsule at Cornwall Town Hall that they will fill with articles and memorabilia about this year’s Quadricentennial celebration.

Historical society president Maryanne Rose O’Dell says that she and others are going to be careful to leave evidence of the time capsule so that in 100 years, on the 500th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s voyage, Cornwall residents can find it. She says that historical records indicate that a time capsule was buried in 1904 to mark the placement of the war memorial on Veteran’s Way, but no one knows where it exactly it is.

In the 2009 time capsule, Rose O’Dell has enclosed a letter to the future describing all the activities that took place in the town and village during the Quadricentennial. “We are pleased to learn that this capsule has been unearthed and that Cornwall is still celebrating the history of this historic journey,” she writes to some unknown future resident. “Enjoy the festivities and may God bless us all.”

Along with the letter, the historical society is enclosing a Quadricentennial flag, an historical society t-shirt, and a stack of laminated articles about local events.
