From Inheritance of Hope

Four local residents are training for the Marine Corps Marathon, which takes place on October 25th in Washington, D.C. They are all running to raise funds and awareness for Inheritance of Hope, a Cornwall on Hudson-based charity that provides all-expenses-paid Family Retreats for young families who have a parent with a life-threatening illness.

Local members of Team Inheritance of Hope have a range of running experience and abilities. Bill Cuthbert, a drummer in the United States Military Academy Band’s Hellcats and West Point resident, is a competitive ultra marathoner. Cuthbert, who boasts endorsements from Hammer Nutrition and Injinji Socks, placed second in his age group this spring at the USA Track and Field National Championship 50 kilometer (32.4 miles) race. He runs between 100-130 miles a week and typically covers a marathon course in 2 ½ hours. For those who are keeping track, that is a sub-six minute mile average.

Lisa Duscio, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, a cancer survivor, ran her first and only marathon in 2007 at the New York Marathon. Compelled by Inheritance of Hope’s mission, she has been training hard to improve on her time while she serves as the coordinator for Team Inheritance of Hope which is participating in other events. The team has openings for runners in Orlando’s Disney Half Marathon and Marathon on January 9th and 10th, and are planning to have slots for the 2010 New York Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and Marine Corps Marathon.

Lois Hicks-Wozniak, a former member of the United States Military Academy Band and West Point resident, has been running for 16 years and has competed in many local races from 5k’s to half marathons. However, this will be her first marathon. She was drawn to Team Inheritance of Hope because of its emphasis on family and through her friendship with Inheritance of Hope co-founder Kristen Milligan, who was diagnosed with life-threatening liver cancer more than six years ago.

Deric Milligan, of Cornwall on Hudson, Executive Director and co-founder of Inheritance of Hope, will run his first marathon for Team Inheritance of Hope in this year’s Marine Corps Marathon. In fact, he had never run more than 5 miles prior to his recent training. Milligan is running to honor his wife, Kristen, who has truly endured a marathon of treatments and surgeries. “Whenever I am training and am inclined to complain about a sore knee or ankle, I am reminded of the grace that Kristen has exhibited through real hardship,” writes Deric on his personalized webpage, a feature made available to every runner. However, his motivation does not end there. He is also running in honor and in memory of those whom Inheritance of Hope has served and to raise awareness and funding so Inheritance of Hope can continue to help families in need.

Inheritance of Hope provides Family Retreats at no cost to participating families from around the country. Most of these families must deal with high medical costs and decreased earnings, which makes this free vacation a true blessing for their family. Transportation, lodging, meals and activities are all paid by Inheritance of Hope through tax-deductible donations. Inheritance of Hope has also developed partnerships to reduce costs, including a partnership with Six Flags and a recently awarded Google Grant. The 4 day events focus on creating a legacy by giving families the opportunity to create precious memories with their own family while creating a community of support with others who understand the challenges they face. Counselors are available for both adults and children throughout the event.

Inheritance of Hope has served families from nine states in their first three Family Retreats. Inheritance of Hope also offers a $1,000 scholarship to a college-bound high school senior who has a parent with a life-threatening illness.
