General News: Weber New Village Police Chief

Former village police chief Paul Weber, an attorney, is opening a law office in Cornwall Plaza.
Former village police chief Paul Weber, an attorney, is opening a law office in Cornwall Plaza.
September 15, 2009

The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson appointed an interim police chief on Monday, just two days before outgoing chief Charles Williams leaves his office.

Paul Weber, a sergeant with the City of Newburgh police department, was hired for the part-time position by the board of trustees at a special meeting on Monday night. Weber, who is also an attorney, is returning to the department where he worked for eight years before moving to the Newburgh department. He will retain his position in Newburgh, where, according to trustee Mark Edsall, Weber handles a number of administrative responsibilities.

The board hired Weber on a part-time interim because, according to Mayor Joseph Gross, the trustees are awaiting the results of an efficiency study now being conducted by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Studies.

Weber was raised in the city of Newburgh and currently resides in the town of Cornwall. He said he has been a police office for a total of 18 years, including ten years in Newburgh and eight in the village.

Comments:

yay! A police officer who actually knows the law that he is entrusted with enforcing. When he was an officer here he was respected by those who dealt with him, and he had a good relationship with the young folks of the town. I am very happy that he accepted the position. One big Attaboy to the Board

My name is Patrick Smith. I found this site after searching for Paul Weber. I met Paul Weber on a boat traveling from Pier 25 to the Financial District in New York City on September 12, 2001. I was a Fireman from Alabama who had just moved to New York City to start a career. After the attacks on the 11th, I was compelled to use my experience in the fire service to assist in any way I could. Not knowing anyone volunteering to work at Ground Zero, I approached Paul Weber and asked if he wouldn?t mind teaming up with me in case anything went wrong. He explained he was a Police Officer for Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department and agreed to work with me the entire day. We spent the day assisting the FDNY in the recovery of those who had fallen the day before. Paul was a great friend to me and I haven?t forgotten the help he provided.

Paul, if you read this, I greatly appreciate your friendship. I regret not keeping in touch over the years. I was glad to see you made Chief of Police in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. I hope you?re doing well. My family thanks you for offering your support on such a horrific day. Take care,

Patrick
