Time is running out for the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson to appoint a part-time interim police chief and Mayor Joseph Gross says that he hopes the board members can agree on a candidate by Monday. Current police chief Charles Williams’ last official day on the job is Wednesday, September 16.

Several candidates have been interviewed by the board of trustees, Mayor Gross said on Friday evening, including former Cornwall police chief Rusty O’Dell, who retired from that position at the end of 2006. The mayor said that they have interviewed several other candidates including Sgt. Paul Weber of the Newburgh police department, who worked with the Cornwall-on-Hudson police until 2005, and Peter Quinn, who retired in January 2009 as a lieutenant in the Stony Point police department.

Mayor Gross said that he is looking for consensus among the board members on a candidate to replace Chief Williams on an interim basis. He noted that a final decision on the position will not be made until the village gets the results of an efficiency study of the police department currently underway by the Division of Criminal Justice Services in Albany. He said that a consolidation of the village department with the town police is unlikely, recalling the lack of interest in the subject when he raised it last year to his counterparts in town.

Gross said that a number of people have expressed interest in the chief’s position and cited the appeal of working in “a nice place” like Cornwall-on-Hudson. While he gave no indication of favoring a particular candidate, Gross said he has known Rusty O’Dell all his life and that he has good qualifications. “He brought some good ideas to the table,” Gross said, “He knows the village.” O’Dell was hired by the Middlebury, Vt., police department in September 2008.

The mayor said that trustees look at the hiring decision differently but he is hoping the five board members can be in “strong agreement” when they gather on Monday.
