General News: Documentary Explores Early Dutch in NY

September 08, 2009

A new documentary sheds new light on the early exploration and settlement of New York by the Dutch. It will air on Thursday, September 10, at 9 p.m. on PBS, but you can watch here online now.

Did you know that the portrait of a man in a ruffled collar that most everyone says is Henry Hudson is not really a portrait of the famed explorer? That’s one of the points made by historian Barry Lewis who takes viewers back in time to rediscover the first European settlers in New York — the Dutch – in this documentary sponsored by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation to mark the 400th anniversary of Hudson’s voyage up the river that bears his name.
