New York State Assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun came down to visit the Cornwall Community Co-op on Thursday, where she gave co-op directors a member item grant of $3,000 to help the start-up operation.

Calhoun admired the fresh tomatoes, corn, berries and other produce and told co-op directors that she is pleased to give money to organizations like the food co-op where it can make a difference.

Nancy Proyect, who is the president of the co-op’s board of directors, said the money will be used to purchase a walk-in refrigerator that will allow the market to purchase more fresh  produce and grass-fed beef that can be stored in the refrigerator.

The Cornwall Food Co-op opened a marketplace on Hudson Street in Cornwall-on-Hudson last spring.  Proyect says that the grant from Calhoun’s office is a signal of the growing support in the community for the co-op’s efforts to bring local vegetables, fruits, cheeses and meats to the families throughout the area.

Asemblywoman Calhoun left with a bag full of corn, berries, cheese and other fresh produce but she made it clear that she is also concerned about the families throughout the Hudson Valley who are struggling to put food on their tables during the current economic slump.   Of the $133,000 she was given in member grants this year by the state assembly, she said that $100,000 will go to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, an institution just down the street from the co-op that helps feed thousands of families throughout the area.

Comments:

This gift and the gift to the Bear Mountain Trails Museum and Zoo are inspirational in a time of such frequent fear, confusion and chaos. How wonderful.
