General News: Sixteen Arrests in July

August 18, 2009

Cornwall-on-Hudson police chief Charles Williams is leaving his position on the heels of one of the most active months in his memory.  In July, Williams reported,  police officers arrested 16 people on various charges from assault to unlawful possession of marijuana.   “I believe that is a record,” he told the village board.

Four of those arrested were accused of assaulting a man behind the Cumberland Farms store and two teens were charged with stealing items from parked vehicles.   Others face charges of aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle and a violation of the alcoholic beverage law.

Williams noted that although the arrest of two teens of charges related to a string of car larcenies may have solved some crimes, two larcenies from vehicles parked on Hudson Street last week show that the problem persists. “They are crimes of opportunity,” Williams said, referring to the thefts of valuables from unlocked cars, “and they are very preventable.”

Comments:

Hey people, LOCK YOUR CARS. And your houses for that matter. If some kid with nothing better to do walks off with your stuff because you didn't want the inconvenience of locking your car you are partly to blame. Don't even bother the cops just eat the loss as a lesson learned. If you are saying that the police should do something about it you are wrong. Police don't make up for people not teaching their kids MORALS. They steal because it is easy, fun, exciting and the parents never taught them right and wrong.

To the mayor and board,
Our police department is now down three members and is leaderless. No sergeant or chief. Way to go. You are going to have a lot to answer for if something bad happens due to your lack of action in manning and running the police department. These quality of life crimes are the result of a skeleton crew police force and just the beginning of a much bigger problem. What will your penny pinching be worth when you lose control of this village?

I agree Bill. our society has stooped to blame the victim and find a reason or a disorder for the criminal if we continue this way we are all doomed

Mr. Klien: I wonder if you would feel the same way if you were the victim of a crime. By your logic, NO crime should be reported to the police. Just chalk it up to the victim's stupidity, right? Why should we have police then? I don't blame the police for the crime wave. They are doing their jobs when people report a crime. And they do a great job.

Holy Tasers, Frank, I personally don't think we have anything to worry about with our skeleton crew police force; at a teenager's birthday party held not long ago (WITH parental supervision) not only did the village PD show up but we had TWO cruisers from the town for back-up, for a total of 4 cruisers, and this was at 8:00, not even after the noise ordinance hour. We're quite safe here in the village. And as far as the 'crime- wave' being the result of a smaller police force, I must agree with my homeys - slacker parents and a lack of self responsibility are just part of the cause. A community that is afraid to speak up and demand proper behaviour from their youth is another factor. If you keep at them long enough they eventually wear down...Oh, and on another note, apparently, even with a full staff 'poor' Michelle Okin still got beat up, >> even with the police responding... go figure why we're still paying for that one...
