The race for two open seats on the town of Cornwall board cooled down when two would-be candidates decided not to file their petitions by the July 16th deadline.  Incumbent candidates Mary Beth Greene Krafft and Al Mazzocca, both Republicans, remain in the running for the two seats.

Republicans Helen Bunt and Graham Kelder had both gathered signatures to get on the ballot but never handed them in.

“I was amazed,” said Lorraine Bennett, the chair of Cornwall’s Republican Committee, "to go through all the trouble of getting that many signature and then not file was quite unusual.”

In a phone interview, Helen Bunt said that she changed her mind about running at the 11th hour after receiving some personal news. "I thank all those people  who supported me and were excited about it," Bunt said. "but circumstance have changed suddenly since then and I can’t go through with it, nothing political."   Graham Kelder said he decided to throw his support to candidate Al Mazzocca.

Bennett said the town will still hold a primary on Tuesday, September 15, but it will be for the Democratic ticket for the District 12 race in the county legislature, which is being contested by Dick Randazzo and Robert Formaget.   Kevin Hines is running unopposed for the Republican ticket.

Also in Orange County,  Democratic challenger Pat O-Dwyer has filed 6,500 signatures on a petition in the race county executive.  She will face Republican incumbent Ed Diana.

Back in Cornwall,  town supervisor Kevin Quigley and town clerk Elaine Tilford Schneer, both Republicans, are running unopposed in the November election.
