Feeling hungry?  Want to experience something with an international flavor right here in Cornwall?  Then you might want to take a drive over to Avocado, a new Mexican-American restaurant on Route 9W.

Kris Galicia, a young Mexican immigrant who has been living in New Windsor since he immigrated from Mexico City as a teenager, has turned his talents to opening Avocado, which offers Mexican food with a “kick.”   Galicia and his extended family that includes his wife, Dulce, his father, and assorted relatives, opened Avocado after searching for several years for the perfect spot to start a restaurant.

Kris says that they loved the spot, the site of former Leprechaun Inn, when they first saw it last winter, signed a lease, then started a thorough renovation of the interior.   They put in new floors, paneling and installed an entire new kitchen, then painted the walls in a palette of warm colors that reflect their Mexican heritage.

Kris says that his father has 30 years in the restaurant business, including 10 years running the kitchen at F.E.A.S.T. in Blooming Grove.  Since he was a student at Newburgh Free Academy, Kris worked alongside his father and learned many restaurant skills.

The menu offers traditional Mexican favorites, tacos and enchiladas, but Galicia points out new twists here and there.  Tuna tacos are part of that different flavor along with chicken stuffed with chorizo, cheese, spinach, ham and grilled corn.   A popular item has been a fresh guacamole that is prepared tableside.  At lunchtime, diners have discovered the Mexican torta, a sandwich stuffed with a variety of meat and cheeses.

Kris says that the response from the community has been good so far and that his goal is to make sure that people who come to check out the new restaurant come back again and again.  To ensure that, he is constantly tweaking the kitchen and trying to do more to make the dining experience at Avocado pleasurable.   As soon as the restaurant receives its liquor license, a grand opening will be held.

My wife and I enjoyed a GREAT meal, enjoyed the music and the comfortable environment, thought the tableside guacamole was incredible, (didn't notice any noise from the cart), and felt the price was very reasonable. We can't wait to go back! Good luck with your new business!
