General News: Two Arrests on 4th of July

July 08, 2009

A 16-year-old male from the town of Newburgh was arrested on the 4th of July after he was observed by police igniting a package of firecrackers near a crowd of people who had come to see the fireworks display at town hall park.

Police chief Todd Hazard said the unidentified youth was charged with reckless endangerment and unlawful dealing with fireworks, both misdemeanors, as well as with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Police also charged Ryan McmIllin, 20, of Cornwall, with unlawful possession of marijuana after he allegedly threw a marijuana cigarette tp the ground when police approached him in the woods behind the town baseball fields during the fireworks display.

During the day, police encountered few problems.  They issued several parking tickets to illegally parked cars at the middle school and investigated a report of a 6-year-old boy who was bitten on the leg by a dog at the town hall fairground early in the afternoon.  According to the police report, the dog’s owner said the child kicked the dog, causing it to react aggressively.

Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson police reported no serious incidents during the celebrations.
