General News: Local Emphasis Requested for 4th of July

July 08, 2009

The Cornwall town board is poised to approve a $1,000 contribution to the Cornwall Independence Day Committee despite the continued protests of board member Randy Clark who thinks the money should be withheld this year because the committee sent the Independence Day program out of town to be printed.

At their work session on Monday evening, Clark said that he has gotten lots of calls from residents who agree with him that the committee should support local businesses.  He also pointed out that the Independence Day festivities cost the town some $12,000 in police, highway and grounds and maintenance labor.

“I think $12,000 in costs is enough out of our taxpayers’ dollars to justify them using a local printer,” Clark told his fellow town council members.

Councilman Kerry McGuinness said that he favored making the $1,000 contribution this year because he thought that now the committee has been warned about going out of town to find a printer that it wouldn’t happen again.  McGuinness also recognized the committee members for the countless hours of volunteer time they donate to make the community day possible.

“I feel very fortunate to have that committee and to have people to step up to run it,” McGuinness said.

Town supervisor Kevin Quigley, who once volunteered with the Independence Day Committee, said everyone agrees with Clark that funds should be spent with local businesses but he wasn’t about to pull support for the committee’s efforts.

“They are all volunteers, community people, who work very hard,” Quigley noted. “We don’t want to kill the volunteerism.”

Committee chair Brendan Coyne said he had no comment on the matter.
