Art in nature is the theme of two unique events taking place in the coming days amid the lush landscape of Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson.

The Compass Show Opens
On Saturday, the One Stone Collective will host an opening of its first exhibit entitled “Compass.”  The show takes over a meadow on The Grail property on Duncan Avenue, where enormous denim sails will fly, and a wooded trail that snakes around the old stone ruins of the former Stillman estate.

Visitors may follow a 150-foot long knotted red net that hugs the trees like a spider’s web to find other pieces of art, including a Byzantine-style self-portrait on lacquered silk and a series of spirals crafted from industrial felt strips.  In other corners of the 45-acre property, visitors will find a mechanized gyroscope attached to a Greek-style bust, a written fairytale about a girl with “a compass for a heart,” and a papier-mache and ceramic-shard winged sculpture inspired by this story.

The One Stone Collective is a group of nine women artists from around the country, including three who live at The Grail.  The opening will be held on June 27 from noon to 6 p.m. and will feature live music by the GO GIRLS NYC, a reading by Collective member Carolyn Turgeon, a raffle, and other activities.

Take a Silent Walk on the Half Moon
On Monday, artistic visions will flow again when Jackie Skrzynski leads the first of twelve Silent Walks on the Half Moon at the base of Storm King Mountain. The walks are designed to allow the participants to experience the natural beauty of the landscape outside its presentation in a painting in a gallery or museum.

Skrzynski says that contextualizing the Silent Walks as an artistic experience allows participants to “turn on their art light.”  “Sharing without words will allow participants to pay attention to the ambient sounds, smells, colors and weather rather than their conversations,” she says.

The monthly walks will allow the participant to appreciate how the landscape changes through the season and, Skrzynski hopes, create a lasting passion for taking walks.
