General News: Library Youth Programs

March 12, 2015

From the Cornwall Public Library

CORNWALL, NY – Cornwall Library’s Youth Services department is busy bringing reading programs to the public that promote literacy and a life-long love of reading. Several of the programs emphasize a connection between parent and child that not only augment what children are learning in school, but also add the important component of bringing family members together. This can be particularly important for those children in the middle school years, when engagement becomes more of a challenge. Knowing that families can often feel overwhelmed with required schoolwork and activities, the library’s book clubs aim to foster an interest in reading for enjoyment and to celebrate reading for pleasure.

To help cultivate these connections, the library offer is offering after-school reading book clubs for a variety of age groups. Talk It Up! is a book club aimed at 1st and 2nd graders that bring families together by asking participants to enjoy and discuss the book at home, and then come to the library and become part of a lively exchange of ideas about the story and illustrations with their peers. Each program also includes a theme-related craft or activity and is enthusiastically hosted by Julie Baxter, a Children’s Librarian and Freelance Performer.

The library also has two other reading clubs, hosted by Children’s Librarian, Martha LaVallee. Book/Snack, geared for 3rd and 4th graders, features a shared discussion of appropriately-aged chapter books and there is always a snack. Readzza, Readzza! gives children in grades 5-8, accompanied by an adult, a chance to share their thoughts and a slice of pizza (special thanks to Friends of the Cornwall Library and Leo’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria). Parents are encouraged to read the books themselves and discuss them with their children both during the club and at home.

For the older kids, the library will be signing up those in grades 6-12 to help fight Cornwall’s Teen Battle of the Books, a program generously sponsored by Friends of the Cornwall Library. Teens will be able to read some or all of eight books that will be available at the library. Once the books are read, teens form teams and meet over the summer to practice mock battles before heading to the region-wide official battle in September. Last year, Cornwall’s team scored in the top five. Please call the library and speak to Liz Fisher or Lisa SinClair for more information and the list of books.

Rounding out its children’s literacy program, the Library continues to offer its popular program, FURacious Readers, with Milo, a trained therapy dog, and his human, Janine Bixler, a library trustee and avid literacy advocate. “For a number of reasons, a child might be shy about reading aloud, or they might feel insecure because their reading skills aren’t as strong as they could be. Reading aloud to a specially-trained dog can make it more enjoyable for the child, as well as build their confidence,” said Liz Fisher. Milo gives his undivided attention and kisses to his reading partner for 10-minute one-on-one sessions. This program is great for many age groups, from picture book readers to prolific readers!

Please call the library at 534-8282 to schedule an appointment with Milo, or stop by the library to pick up a copy of the reading club book pick of the month when you register for the program. See dates, times and book picks below:
