General News: Town Approves Verizon FIOS Franchise

June 10, 2009

Cornwall residents should be able to have  access to Verizon’s FIOS service soon after the town board voted on Monday to grant a franchise for the phone, internet and cable service that is delivered on a high-speed fiber optic network.

More than 150 communities in New York state have agreed to let a franchise agreement with Verizon for its FIOS service.  Only two other municipalities in Orange County – the town and city of Newburgh – are among them.

The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson has not taken action on a similar request from Verizon for a franchise agreement.  The agreement is subject to review by the New York State Public Service Committee before the service will be provided to the public

UGH!!! So THAT's what has been holding up availability of FIOS in the Village??? Come on folks - let's get on the ball. What's the issue with granting this? I already have FIOS for internet access. Why can't I have it for TV?

agreed chuck, it would save me 60 bucks a month.

We've been waiting for over a year for FIOS TV to come to the village. We took our satellite dish down when we had our new garage built, thinking FIOS was coming soon. No TV for a year now and the library is running out of DVD's. I hope the village takes action soon.

I've just sent Joe Gross an email asking about this. Perhaps if others would do the same he'll do what it takes to make this happen? Glad to see I am not alone in wanting this. I know from many I've talked to that there a LOT's of village residents who want to make the move to FIOS and have been waiting and waiting. I thought the delay was on the Verizon side of things. But when I got FIOS Internet that no longer made sense. This explains it. What I don't understand is why HAVEN'T they approved the agreement? Perhaps there are reasons we're not aware of? But it doesn't make sense to me.

I just wanted to let folks here know that I recieved a response from Joe Gross. He said he was first approached by Verizon about the franchise for COH about 2 month ago and that approval is in the works. FIOS TV should be available from Verizon by August. Woooo whooooo!!!!

Way to go Joe!
Thanks
