Plans for the Angola Road Park appear to be back on track after a Cornwall town board meeting Wednesday evening.

The town is developing the 40-acre park in conjunction with the environmental group Scenic Hudson, which is dedicated to preserving open space throughout the region. Last month, town board members Randy Clark and Al Mazzocca balked at the prospect of building a wooden pergola to the specifications required by Scenic Hudson and they suggested that the town give the park back to the group.

On Wednesday, Michael Knudson, a representative of Scenic Hudson said that his organization wouldn’t require the town to build the pergola. “If the town would like to not build it, that’s ok,” he told the board. His priority for the park is to have the trails completed and he suggested that the town install a few benches of natural materials along the paths so that people could rest.

Knudson also responded to a comment from councilman Clark that some people in town would like a dog run at the park. “If the community is really interested in a dog run, we can consider that,” he said, “as long as it doesn’t overwhelm other uses for the park.”

Another issue of concern at the meeting was a long-anticipated plan to add soccer fields to the land owned by the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum, which abuts Angola Park. The museum had agreed to the fields about a decade ago but those plans were put on hold until a new access road could be built to the museum from Angola Road. The new Muser Road was dedicated last fall.

In 2003, the Cornwall Youth Soccer organization gave the museum $15,000 toward the cost of constructing the road, according to Rob Mariani, who represented the soccer league at the meeting. Nature museum executive director Jackie Grant said that money was strictly for the road and noted that the soccer group is free to build fields if it wants.

Scenic Hudson also has a conservation easement with the museum and Knudson said that his organization’s only concern about the soccer fields is that no permanent goal posts or concession stand be installed.

The atmosphere at this week’s meeting was much less tense than it was a month ago and when councilman Mazzocca asked if Scenic Hudson would like to buy back the park, Knudson smiled and said quietly that it really wasn’t possible.

As for the pergola, its fate was practically sealed before the meeting began. The project had been put out to bid and no one had submitted a proposal to build the pergola.

Comments:

The CYS league gave $15,000 for a road? And I was told the fees were for "insurance and uniforms". Where was "Santa Larkin"? It's amazing how much money these sports groups acquire and carry over from year to year.
