General News: Two More Seek Support in Town Race

The race for two seats on the town of Cornwall board is heating up, with two more people expressing their interest in becoming candidates.
At a recent meeting of the Cornwall Republican Committee, Helen Bunt and Graham Kelder both came forward as potential candidates for the office. Current council members Mary Beth Greene-Krafft and Al Mazzocca have already said they will be running for re-election in November.
With four possible candidates, all committee members, no one received the Republican endorsement for the town board race, according to its chair Lorraine Bennett. She said the committee did endorse Kevin Quigley for supervisor and Elaine Tilford Schneer for town clerk.
The candidates will have to gather signatures on a petition before their names get on the ballot in November. If all four submit valid petitions, the Republicans will hold a primary in September to narrow the field to two candidates.
Graham Kelder said in a phone interview that he’s not sure that he will stay in the race if it means going to a primary, a move that will cost the taxpayers. “We’ll have to wait and see,” he said, in reference to whether he will submit a petition.
Kelder served on the town council for five years beginning in the late 1980s. Helen Bunt served as town supervisor from 2000 to 2002. She is currently a member of the town planning board.
No word yet on whether the Democrats will field any candidates in the town election.
