General News: Local Wines Get National Attention

Palaia Vineyard's award-winning wines.
Palaia Vineyard's award-winning wines.

Wines from the Palaia Vineyards in Highland Mills won two awards in an international wine competition in California this spring and seven more in competitions in New York State.

The winery’s mead won a Silver Medal and its 2006 Traminette won a Bronze Medal in the Women’s Wine Competition in California where the wines faced some stiff competition.

In the Finger Lakes International Competition, judges awarded Silver Medals for the vineyard’s 2006 Merlot and the 2006 Lemberger, along with Bronzes for the Joyful Pink and 2006 Cabernet Franc.  The Joyful Pink wine is a specialty wine whose sale includes a donation to the Young Survivors of Breast Cancer campaign.

Closer to home, the vineyard’s 2006 Merlot took home the Gold and Best of Category in the Hudson Valley Winemaking Competition, along with a Bronze for the 2006 Cabernet Franc.

Winemaker Jan Palaggi says she is most proud of the awards that her small winery garnered because they were up against the big California wineries that have been in the business for decades.   Palaggi and her husband opened Palaia Vineyards in 2006 and they now produce more than 20 varieties of red and white wines, along with mead made from local clover honey.

The vineyard grows the Lemberger, Traminette and Cabernet Franc grapes right at the winery and Palaggi says that the awards they received for those varietals were in some ways sweeter than the others.  “Oh heck, it's just great to know that people who taste wine all the time like my wines as much as I do,” Palaggi concluded.
