Two members of the Cornwall Central Middle School Band, Scott Chatfield, who plays baritone saxophone, and Jesse DeTeresa, who plays alto saxophone, were recently accepted into the prestigious New York State Lion's Club Band.

The two young men will perform at the annual New York State Lion's Club Convention in Binghamton, NY during Memorial Day weekend.

The band is comprised of the finest 7-12 grade musicians from New York State and Bermuda. The students will meet and rehearse a full program of musical selections and perform throughout the weekend.

Jesse and Scott are both active members of their school music program here in Cornwall, where they have been members of the All-County Band, the CCMS bands, the sax ensemble, jazz band and jazz combo.

Brendan Coyne, the Cornwall School Board president and a member of the Cornwall Lion’s Club, began the search for local talent by contacting Steve Kessler, Band Director at Cornwall Middle School. Coincidentally, when Kessler was 14 years old, he, too, played in the same Lion’s Club Band, representing the borough of Queens on the baritone horn.

Kessler is thrilled that two of his student musicians will take part in this group. Although over thirty years have past since Kessler was in the band, he knows that the music will be both fun and challenging and that the entire experience will be a very meaningful one for both Scott and Jesse. They will have the opportunity to meet and work with musicians from all over New York State and Bermuda.

“Our students will put their musical skills to test as they learn a good deal of music in a short time and perform it for large crowds,” Kessler said. Kessler is confident that the two students from Cornwall will do a great job because he has trained them to read a lot of new music and to reach higher and higher musical goals.

The Chatfield and DeTeresa families, along with Band Director Kessler, would like to thank the local chapter of the Lion’s Club for its financial sponsorship of the young musicians’ weekend in Binghamton where they will represent the Cornwall community.
