General News: Art Walk Returns to Cornwall

April 14, 2009

From the Greater Cornwall Art Walk Committee

The second annual Greater Cornwall Art Walk featuring the work of 40 artists, launches May 16, 2009, with a reception from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the historic Sands-Ring homestead in Cornwall, N.Y.   During the festive month-long Art Walk, nearly 30 local businesses will display the work of the talented local artists, whose work ranges from landscape and still life paintings to multi-media creations and photography.

The Greater Cornwall Art Walk was created by the Greater Cornwall Chamber of Commerce in 2008 as a way to invite visitors to walk the charming streets of this 19th-century municipality, which includes the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, and enjoy first-hand the beauty that attracts so many artists to the area.

This year, the historic New York Military Academy will feature artwork by the school’s students on display at its museum on campus every Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.

A new feature will be added on Sunday, May 31 only, when the Cornwall Art Trail takes visitors away from downtown Cornwall and into the rural area of Angola Road for special exhibits at the Cromwell Manor Bed & Breakfast, Clearwater’s Distinctive Gifts at Jones Farm and Shadow Mountain Farm.  The trail will also include a stop at the Storm King Golf Course on Ridge Road, where art will be on display in the new clubhouse.

The Art Walk will also feature the 2nd Annual Walk-Off from 12 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, in which townies and village people will compete to see how many businesses they can visit in a single afternoon.

Children will have a chance to show their artistic talent as well, with elementary school-age students encouraged to color drawings that will be available from their teachers and submit them to the Art Walk.  The winner will be awarded a $25 prize.  Submissions may be dropped off at the Cornwall Yarn Shop, at 227 Main Street, in Cornwall.

Printed guides to the artists and the businesses where their work will be on display will be available throughout the greater Cornwall area.  The Greater Cornwall Art Walks ends on June 13.
