General News: He Works to Turn Sports Lovers Green

Kevin Trotta

Sports enthusiasts who spend hours at the baseball diamond or soccer field often love the outdoors, too, and a local man is part of a global effort to bring environmental awareness to the playing field. Kevin Trotta started the New York chapter of the Global Sports Alliance two years ago and his work to unite sports and the environment has already attracted national attention. This month he will receive the regional Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Quality Award for the work he has done with the sports alliance. The ceremony will take place on Earth Day, April 24, at the EPA’s regional headquarters in Manhattan.

Trotta brings a unique background to his environmental work. A lawn care specialist who has worked for golf courses, for the past twenty years Trotta has worked with the northern Rockland school district to develop an environmentally sensitive method to care for its playing fields. When he learned about the Global Sports Alliance, he saw a chance to promote environmental awareness to a whole new audience.

“It’s a brilliant concept,” Trotta said in a phone interview. “Not everyone cares about the environment but they do care about sports.” Trotta said the alliance’s founder in Japan created a way to leverage the universal appeal of sports and now works in partnership with the United Nations Environmental Program.

The alliance created an Eco-flag that can be flown at sporting events. Locally, Trotta has collaborated with the Greenway games in Cold Spring, a 260-mile bicycle Green Ride, and the Knickerbocker Ice Festival in Rockland, where the Eco-flag has been flown. He is currently working with Cornell University and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission to turn the 10-acre playing field at Bear Mountain State Park into an environmentally friendly turf grass management area.

Trotta would be happy to work with any sporting group that is interested in promoting environmental awareness at their events. He noted that even small steps, like having a recycling area at the playing field, can make a difference. If you would like to learn more about Trotta’s effort locally, you may email him at t[email protected].    You may learn more about the Global Sports Alliance here or its USA branch here.

Comments:

Sounds like something the sports groups of Cornwall should really take an interest in. I just finished getting my EcoBroker Designation - whether you believe in global warming or not we all need to start taking care of the world we live in.
