This weekend a band of pirates takes over the stage of Cornwall Central High School as Lee Road elementary school students stage “Pirates!  The Musical.”

More than 100 children from first through fourth grade stage this lively musical of misadventure on the high seas as the pirates, lead by Queen Morganza and King High C’s, discover a stowaway on board the Jolly Roger ship.

To aid in the pursuit of the unwanted stowaways are Red Beard, Blue Beard, Yellow Beard, Purple Bears, and more, all members of the toughest pirate crew the world would ever want to see.  Throw into the mix a gang of prisoners, swashbucklers and buccaneers and you can see how the Jolly Roger could turn into chaos and anarchy.

There are lovely mermaids and even more lovely tunes that the children belt out with glee.

The entire production is directed and choreographed by Ann Shatto, one of the dedicated group of parents who help bring this fantastic musical to life. Karen Snider is the musical director and Maura Franke aand Rhonda Growney who produced the show for the Cornwall Elementary School drama club. Dianne Gualano oversaw the creation of the elaborate costumes and Dorothy Henry and Glenn Gualano built the set.

People who are lucky enough to see one of the productions, which start with a dress rehearsal on Friday the 13th at 7p.m. and a full production on Saturday at 7 p.m.  and end with a matinee on Sunday at 1 p.m., will enjoy their adventure on the high seas.

The production is based on the play “Pirates: The Musical” by John Jacobson and Roger Emerson.

To quote from the words of a mean old pirate, “Aaaargh…. And all aboard mates!”
