General News: Teen Charged with Damaging Police Cruiser

March 03, 2009

A 17-year-old male from Cornwall was arrested last Wednesday after he allegedly tried to kick out the rear window of a police cruiser following his arrest on a charge of petty larceny.

The teen’s arrest resulted from an investigation by Cornwall police into the theft of an amplifier and radar detector from a vehicle parked on Benedict Lane.  Police say that a witness saw the youth break the window of the vehicle to gain access.

An hour after the crime was reported, a suspect was picked up as he sat in a vehicle in the CVS parking lot.   Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard says that the 17-year-old was arrested on charges of petty larceny, criminal mischief in the 4th degree and possession of stolen property.  As the teen was being taken back to police headquarters, Hazard reports, the youth kicked and damaged the rear window of the cruiser.  He was then charged with criminal mischief in the third degree, a class E felony.

(The youth’s name is being withheld as a result of a new New York State law that prohibits the release of information about the arrests of people 16, 17, or 18 years-old.  That law took effect on January 1, 2009.   The policy of News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson has been to not publish the names of youths ages 16, 17 or 18 unless they were charged with a felony.  It’s new policy will adhere to state law.)
