General News: Insurance Costs Rise for Village

February 24, 2009

Three dams in Black Rock Forest Preserve are causing the village to increase its insurance premium payments by $25,000.

It seems that insurance carriers are wary of the risk posed by the dams that could cause a lot of damage downstream if a catastrophe ever occurred.

That’s what village clerk Jeanne Mahoney told the Cornwall-on-Hudson trustees on Monday night when she said that 9 of the ten insurance companies she contacted for a bid declined to make an offer.   She also said that the village’s recent settlement of a case involving a former village employee also figured in their refusal to make a bid.

The board authorized Mahoney to proceed with negotiations with the one insurance carrier that proposed to insure the village at a cost of $168,000.  The current policy expires on February 28th.

Mahoney said that the new carrier agreed to insure the village with the understanding that the dams in Black Rock will be inspected within six months, a move that will cost the village a substantial unbudgeted amount.

Comments:

Two things.
First, maybe an official inspection will end up saving us some money. If an inspector passed the dams then we could find other insurers at a lower fee.
2nd. I hope someone is writing to Albany. With President Obama's money to make work we could get the dams re-done thus creating jobs and solving the villages problems.

Mr. Olley, I hope you'll be encouraged to know that a comprehensive assessment of our dam system has been performed recently by our Water Dept. superintendent, Bob June. The improvement projects outlined in this report are "shovel-ready", and we believe would be good candidates for federal stimulus money. Mayor Gross has submitted this report to Sen. Gillebrand and to the county, as they would be our links to this financing. Let's hope that the money and the projects transpire, and that it will ultimately have the result of giving us a more favorable profile to prospective insurers. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Sincerely,
Rick Gioia
Trustee

Mr. Gioia, Gillibrand is spelled with and 'i' after 'l' not an 'e.'

Thanks, Mr. Bruce. If that's the only thing being pointed out, then I guess the gist was understood.

Dear Mr. Rick, When asking for money from someone it usually helps to know how to spell their name. Pronouncing it correctly usually helps too. Addressing them correctly is another helper.
