The new clubhouse at Storm King Golf Club is open for business and even with a foot of snow on the greens, members are clearly excited about enjoying the amenities offered in the 6,000-square foot facility.

Dan Mahoney, who oversaw the construction of the new building as president of the club, gave a tour recently. The building sits on a hill where you can enjoy a full view of the greens and a stunning panorama of Black Rock Forest from the grill room, dining room and bar.

Inside the main floor of the clubhouse, thick oak columns and a beautiful polished oak bar add a distinguished atmosphere to the bar and grill. Next door in the formal dining room, full-service meals are served on linen-covered tables, each offering a view outside. The kitchen, with its walk-in refrigerator and freezer, would be the envy of any restaurateur.

Mahoney says that the dining room will be available to rent for special events, noting that it is already fully booked for the month of April. On the lower level of the building a conference room can also be rented out to groups.

Downstairs one will find the heart of the clubhouse operation: the locker rooms for men and women, a pro-shop and a card room for members.

The Storm King Golf Club is celebrating 115 years of history this year and the walls are filling up with memorabilia of the great golfers and club members who were granted lifetime membership. Ernest Stillman donated the land to the golf course in the 1890s and he was one of the founding members. Stillman later donated the lands of Black Rock Forest to Harvard University.

The old clubhouse, which Mahoney says is scheduled to be torn down shortly, was built around the turn of the century and the first addition to it was added in 1912.

Current golf club president Thomas Fenton pointed out that the final touches to the club will be completed in the spring, when a new driveway and landscaping will be put in. He said more work is planned for the greens, where new tees and new traps will be added.

Fenton noted that new members are welcomed at the club, including social members, who are entitled to use the clubhouse restaurants and facilities. He said that at Storm King, women have equal access to the greens, unlike many clubs that prohibit women from playing on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Obviously pleased with the outcome of the new clubhouse, Fenton said that the services inside are only rivaled by the beauty outside. “We give them everything, plus the view,” he said.
