General News: Village Recycling Pick-Ups Added

Do you have trouble keeping straight the schedule for recycling pick-ups in the village? Well, it may have just gotten easier for folks who want to rely on a pick-up every other week.
In early 2008, the village board reduced the pick-ups from weekly to every first and third or every second and fourth Wednesday, depending on what part of the village you live in. The problem arose for some residents who planned on a pick up every week, then discovered that the fifth Wednesday of a month was not included in the calculations after they put their trash out and it was not picked up.
On Monday, the village board members agreed to pick up recyclables village-wide on the fifth Wednesday of each month. In 2009, that will occur four times, in April, July, September and December.
In making the change, trustees Mark Edsall and Barbara Gosda noted that the vast majority of complaints they have received about the garbage schedule were about the lack of pick-ups on the fifth week. Residents also complained about that in comments posted to Mayor Joe Gross’s letter about his interest in running for a second term.
Mayor Gross said he was trying to find the middle ground for the policy, noting that not all village residents have large families and some are single people who generate little trash.
