General News: Village Election Plans Take Shape

Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Mayor Joseph Gross is asking the public for its support as he continues to tackle the issues he raised when he was first elected two years ago, like the village’s debt. Mayor Gross won the 2007 election by a wide margin, defeating long-term mayor Ed Moulton, who had been in office 27 years.
In a letter to the editor, mayor Gross notes that since he entered office the village’s $8.5 million debt has been lowered by close to $2 million and he also warns that more belt-tightening is ahead. (Read his letter here.)
Referring to the budget outlook for 2009, mayor Gross writes that village residents “realize that short of raising taxes, we must cut back on services.” The mayor has prepared a draft budget proposal that will be introduced to the board of trustees this Monday.
Mayor Gross has picked up a petition to gather signatures for a re-election bid and in his letter he implies another run for mayor. “I remain determined to continue the job I started two years ago as village mayor and trust that residents will do their part and continue to support my efforts.”
Village elections will be held on March 18. Also up are two spots on the board of trustees. The terms of Mark Edsall and William Fogarty expire this year.
Mark Edsall says he definitely is running again this year. He was first elected trustee in 1999 and believes that there is still a lot of work he can do for the village. “I feel as strongly now as I did the first time,” he said earlier this week.
Trustee William Fogarty has not yet picked up a petition to run again for his seat and says he will announce his plans next Monday at the board meeting being held to discuss the budget.
The only other candidate at this time is Peter X. Neuman, who launched his campaign for mayor in December. Neuman told News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson that he had collected enough signatures to get on the ballot in his first day out knocking on doors last week.
