General News: Supervisor Quigley Talks About Past & Future

December 31, 2008

At the end of his first year as Cornwall town supervisor, Kevin Quigley says that the job held few surprises and is “a lot like running a business.” He credits the department heads and other staffers for the smooth operation of town affairs.

Looking ahead, Quigley says a drop in state funds is coming because of the current financial crisis but he believes the town will “make due.” “We planned for a rougher year,” he said, adding that he expects a drop in local property tax revenue as some homeowners go into bankruptcy.

Despite the pressure on revenues, supervisor Quigley said the town spends what it needs. He said there have been no lay-offs or cutting of services in Cornwall, unlike other municipalities.

Quigley would like to see the town get a low-cost bond also to rebuild the filtration plant underneath the pool house in the town park, along with other smaller projects. The town spent $13,800 last summer to repair leaks in the system, Quigley said, and the pool was closed the entire season. Quigley expects the pool to be open in 2009.

He also said that he’d like to try and fix up Main Street and welcomed enforcement of the building codes throughout the area. A grant announced this week will be used to study how to revitalize the business district. (see story)

One accomplishment Quigley pointed to was the closing of the dog shelter, whose presence had riled neighbors for years. He said he would like to move some town workers to the dog shelter building, once it is renovated.

The town’s annual re-organization meeting will be held on Monday, January 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Cornwall Town Hall
