General News: Parents Fundraise for New Play Set

The new play set will fill the empty spot
The new play set will fill the empty spot
September 03, 2007

Students at Cornwall Elementary School on Lee and families throughout Cornwall who use the playground at the school will soon have a new play set if a group of determined parents is successful.

The parents’ group, chaired by JoAnn Parker, is trying to raise the $25,000 it will cost to buy and install a new play area to replace an unsafe and outmoded one that was taken down a couple of years ago.

They have been busy this summer creating a fundraiser event that will not only entertain but, they hope, put them over the top of their goal.

On October 20, the parents will stage a local version of “Deal or No Deal,” a popular game show on TV. The local version, which will be held at Cornwall high school, will offer valuable prizes to those players who will be chosen at random from the audience.

The parents have solicited gifts from local business people who are donating tremendous prizes, from signed sports memorabilia and a flat TV screen to a WII system or dinner and a movie. The fundraisers welcome any business or community member who would still wants to chip in.

“It is a community playground and we are looking for the community to support us,” says Mrs. Parker, who pointed to young children playing while their mothers walked around the nearby track.

The new play set will be compliant with requirements for disabled children, including a wheelchair ramp entrance and an area for a person in a wheelchair to do pull-ups. Other features include four to five slides, monkey bars, and a fire pole, all made from safer plastic materials that are guaranteed to last longer than the wood used on the old set.

The game show extravaganza will also feature trivia contests between acts and raffles – including a chance to win a play set that has been donated by American Play Products, of New Windsor.

Comments:

Yes, "It's a community playground", unless you are a 10-85 (teenager) hanging out there after school hours.
Our children grow up playing on these areas and then all of a sudden they are told "You can't be here. Go somewhere else. " (And get asked to move along from there too!)
