General News: Candidate for Mayor Gathers Signatures

December 31, 2008

Peter Neuman, a retired attorney running for mayor of Cornwall-on-Hudson, gathered enough signatures to launch his bid for office on his first day of going door-to-door in the village on Tuesday. Petitions to run for public office were released on December 30 and Neuman wasted no time in hitting the streets.

A minimum of 75 signatures is required to get a candidate’s name on the ballot in the March 2009 election. Neuman says that after canvassing houses from Payson Road to Avenue A, one hundred voters had signed his petition.

“I got enough the first day,” Neuman said in a phone interview. “but I’m going to keep going. I’m not going to stop until I get 200 signatures.”

Neuman said he created his own party to campaign in the election, calling it the Lower Taxes Party because taxes are the major issues.

Reached by phone on Monday, Mayor Gross said he is too busy working on the preliminary 2009 village budget, which is due this week, to talk about his political plans. He has not yet said whether he plans to run for a second term as village mayor but promises to talk about his intentions after the new year.

Comments:

Please, Joe, please run. Two years is not enough to establish a healthy, vital government. Please run so that we have some choice, or should I say 'voice', in what goes on here.

Would anyone have factual information in respect to savings with the new recycling program? If the cost is significant we really need to have pickup every other week as the 1st and 3rd week is not working for us as a family. If the cost savings is nominal we really need to scrap this new program. We pay taxes and garbage fees!

Happy New Years everyone. 6:30 a.m. had my first cup of coffee and read the paper already. Kids change even an old guy like me.

Hi Kate. Not all attorneys have horns. My little brother is a great guy and has more lawyer jokes at the ready then anyone I know. I also hope Joe runs just so we can have choice again. I've only lived in C-O-H appx. 8 years and Joe Gross was one of the few who went out of his way to introduce himself and have been friends since. I can sincerely say he is a good guy. I know he is frugal and concerned about our debt which I know helped sweep him into office. We need to see how he has done in trimming our debt in these tough times. My bet he has done well. BUT I do welcome Mr. Neuman tossing his hat in the ring. Its great that more people are becoming involved. I do attribute that to our Cornwall Local Editor who recently left us. She is truly missed as the Local is NOT the same without her dogged reporting. Where ever she ends up I know she we be successful. I also must say local government has become more open under Mayor Gross. Old boy networks cause nothing but problems. At least we have a Mayor who sincerely listens to his constituents. March 09 should be interesting. Have a Safe, Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Happy New Year to all!
Yes, Pat, I know not all attorneys have horns; I work for an attorney and he is a great guy and a decent human being.
It's human nature and character that I am talking about. Whether Neuman is a lawyer, a baker or a candlestick-maker it doesn't really matter. He does not inspire me."The Lower Taxes Party" gee, why didn't anybody think of that sooner...
