General News: Schools Ready for First Day of Classes
August 31, 2007
When Cornwall students return to school next Wednesday, September 5, they may notice a few changes that have taken place during the summer break.
Schools superintendent Timothy Rehm said that the district has hired a person to chair the special education committee, which determines if a child needs special assistance and then works with families and teachers to achieve that goal.
Kristine Mullin has been designated by the school board to take on this full-time responsibility as the district works to correct problems in its special education program.
Earlier this year, a study of the district’s program showed that it was spending too much and not getting the kind of results it needed. It also recommended the hiring of a special education committee chairperson.
Following current trends, the district is bringing more special education students back into the classroom, rather than sending them outside the district, an approach known as inclusion.
Ms. Mullins will help oversee this transition and provide communication between student, family, teachers and administrators. “She will be providing the follow-up that is important to make sure that the programs are working for the child,” said Superintendent Rehm.
Rehm also said that the district has added three new teachers for the inclusion program to assist students in grades three through six. The new teachers will be in addition to one inclusion teacher who already worked for the district.
Other summer projects in the district include the replacement of the ceilings on the first and second floors of Cornwall-on-Hudson elementary school and a fresh paint job of the classrooms and hallways.
Technicians are still working on the revamping of the communication system between all buildings in the district. The $650,000 project, which will be paid largely by the BOCES system, will replace the outdated phone and email system in the schools. Once it is completed in October, Rehm said, it will enable people to communicate more effectively.
High school athletes will be getting back to business even before the first day of school. The football team, under the direction of newly-hired head coach Marcus Hughes, plays its first game on Saturday in Red Hook.
